2008 Rumsey Summer Scholarship
& Potenza Award
Application Deadline: February 6, 2008, 5p.m.
Overview
The purpose of the Rumsey Scholarship is to provide funding for summer travel to students who wish to further develop their artistic practice. Approximately $3,000 is awarded each year to a student entering their senior year. Applicants must participate in a competitive exhibition, from which the Visual Studies faculty will select a scholarship winner based on the quality of both the exhibited sample work and the accompanying written travel proposal. Scholarship recipients are required to showcase the work resulting from their summer study in a Fall 2008 follow-up exhibition.
Students who participate in the Rumsey Scholarship competition will also be considered for the Sally Hoskins Potenza Annual Award. The Potenza Award will be credited towards tuition. If no tuition is owed, a cash award will be made.
Eligibility
Applicants must be junior-level BA or BFA Art majors with a department GPA of 2.5 or higher. Fourth-year students who have junior-standing in the Art program due to a change in majors are also considered eligible. Applicants must return for a two-semester senior year and must complete all graduation requirements by, but not before, May 2009. The Visual Studies Academic Advisor will verify the eligibility of each applicant.
Travel Proposal
A detailed, typewritten proposal describing your summer travel plan must be submitted prior to the opening of the competitive exhibition. The proposal must be signed by a faculty mentor who supports your plan, and it should include:
- the travel locale and itinerary
- the purpose of study
- a description of how this experience will assist the development of your artwork
- a detailed estimate of travel costs and/or tuition
If the objective of the proposal is not fulfilled, the recipient will be required to return the award.
