VS 625 - Instant Image — Snapshot to Telepresence

Students’ lives revolve around the instantaneous image and interactivity. This course will provide students the history of the development of ideas, theories, and technologies around the concepts and experiences of instantaneity, simultaneity and electronic “liveness.” The course begins with instantaneous photograph (snapshot) and chronophotography around 1880 and moves forward through the introduction of cinema, television and video, radar, surveillance satellites, the Internet and other present-day telecommunications technologies. Artistic explorations of time in images will be emphasized, e.g., Cubism, Futurism, Expanded Cinema, Video Art.
