AHI 553 - Historic Preservation: Case Study: Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House

This course if designed to involve graduate students interested in museum studies and historic preservation in the current efforts to turn Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin D. Martin House into a world-class house museum, a facility that will include five Wright-designed structures, two converted contiguous buildings and a newly-designed visitor facility. The project will involve the histories of preservation in the United States, of Wright’s work, of Buffalo, of the Larkin company and of the Martin family. Students will be introduced to the legal, technical, political, social, historical, and educational aspects of the project, many of which will be on-going during the course and over the next five to ten years. The curator, the architect, the Executive Director of the Martin House Restoration Corporation, the contractor, and others will share their views and experiences as part of the class.
